Woodworm is the most prevelant wood boring insect found in buildings in the UK. Woodworm is actually the larvae to the Furniture Bettle. The furniture bettle causes little damage it is the woodworm (laravae) that cause the damage. The female Furniture Bettle lays up to 800 eggs, often in the open end grain of sawn timber, prefering softwood in cool damp conditions. The eggs are white and acorn shaped which hatch over 2- 4 weeks. The larvae that emerge eat their way into the timber and eat for 2- 3 years working their way out of the wood to procrecate. Leaving small holes in the wood and a small pile of wood dust. Woodworm can be particulary dangerous in buildings with wooden structure/ boards etc.
